2025: WA Poised for Another Year of Jobs Prosperity

Back to Blogs

Western Australia remains at the heart of major mining and defence projects in 2025, reinforcing its strategic importance and resource-driven economy. With both the state and federal governments investing heavily into the country’s defence capabilities, we can expect the defence industry to create job opportunities. Combined with strong mining activity, this means WA is gearing up for another big year ahead.

In this blog, we take a look at the key projects shaping WA this year and highlight how the state is crucial for driving Australia’s mining and defence sectors, boosting economic growth, enhancing national security and the creation of new jobs.

Western Australia’s Mining Projects

Lamb Creek Iron Ore Project

Mineral Resources is pushing ahead with the Lamb Creek iron ore project in the Pilbara region. The company is seeking environmental approvals, expecting to commence production by 2025/26. This project is set to replace the depleting Wonmunna mine, ensuring continued iron ore output in the area.

Worsley Alumina Extension

South32 is progressing with plans to extend the life of the Boddington bauxite mine, located approximately 130km from Perth. Federal approval for this extension is anticipated in early 2025, ensuring the project's longevity.

Rio Tinto’s Brockman Syncline 1

Rio Tinto’s Brockman Syncline 1 project in WA’s Pilbara region is set to begin construction in 2025, aiming for completion by late 2027. It will support existing mining operations with new infrastructure, including a crusher and conveyor. Approvals are underway, ensuring long-term iron ore production in the region. The project is expected to create hundreds of jobs during construction and operation.

Western Australia’s Defence Projects

Henderson Defence Precinct

The Australian government is establishing a consolidated Defence Precinct at Henderson, south of Perth. This initiative includes continuous naval shipbuilding, such as the construction of Army landing craft and general-purpose frigates. An initial investment of $127 million over three years has been committed for planning and preliminary works, with the precinct expected to support around 10,000 high-skilled local jobs over the next two decades.

Submarine Rotational Force-West (SRF-West) Infrastructure Project

The upcoming SRF-West project supports the development of the necessary operational capabilities and skills for Australia to safely and securely own, operate and sustain nuclear-powered submarines. This project is critical to Australia's broader defence strategy, enhancing the nation's maritime capabilities.

Defence Industry Skills Development

The Western Australian government has committed $35 million to bolster the state's defence industry workforce. Initiatives include the Defence Industry Incentive (launched in 2020) which has supported 68 employers in training a staggering 435 new apprentices in engineering trades. This investment ensures a skilled workforce to meet the demands of current and future defence projects.

These are just some of the exciting projects across Western Australia that underscore its pivotal role in Australia's mining and defence sectors, contributing significantly to economic growth and national security but, excitingly, creating new engineering and technical jobs.
