Australia's Oil and Gas Industry's Role in Energy Transition

Towards a Net-Zero Future: Australia’s Oil and Gas Industry's Role in the Energy Transition

Back to Blogs

Meeting the energy demands of a global population expected to reach 10 billion by 2050, while reducing emissions is a mammoth challenge. The oil and gas industry, with its unique position and expertise, is a key player in driving innovation and sustainability in the energy transition.

No longer just part of the challenge, the industry is slicing the problem from different angles to provide reliable energy while reducing emissions and creating all-new energy job opportunities.

How the Oil and Gas Sector is contributing to a cleaner future

The oil and gas industry is taking impactful steps to reduce its environmental impression by:

  • Cutting Operational Emissions: companies are investing in energy efficiency, reducing flaring and managing methane emissions. Many are now integrating low-carbon or renewable energy into their operations to cut emissions.

  • Helping Consumers Lower Emissions: the sector is promoting cleaner energy solutions like natural gas and developing low-carbon technologies, including hydrogen fuel cells and solar, which help reduce emissions for consumers.

Embracing Renewables: The Growing Investment in Green Energy

Oil and gas companies are increasingly investing in renewable energy projects such as hydrogen, solar and biofuels. These investments show a clear commitment to building a more sustainable energy future, leveraging the industry's resources and knowledge to accelerate the growth of green energy.

Here’s a snapshot of some exciting energy projects driven by the sector:

Hydrogen Production and Export

  • Woodside Energy: developing the H2Perth project in Western Australia, a large-scale hydrogen and ammonia production facility that will use natural gas with carbon capture and storage (blue hydrogen) and renewable energy (green hydrogen).

  • Santos: exploring hydrogen production through its Moomba CCS Project, which will use carbon capture to produce low-emission hydrogen in South Australia.

  • BP: partnering with the Asian Renewable Energy Hub (AREH) to develop large-scale renewable hydrogen and ammonia production in the Pilbara region.

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)

  • Chevron's Gorgon Project: one of the world's largest CCS projects, designed to store up to 4 million tonnes of CO₂ annually.

  • Santos Moomba CCS Project: aims to capture and store 1.7 million tonnes of CO₂ annually, enabling the production of low-carbon fuels.

  • BP Kwinana Refinery: repurposed for CCS to support decarbonization efforts.

Biofuels Development

  • BP Kwinana Refinery Conversion: transitioning the former oil refinery in Western Australia into a renewable fuels hub producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and biodiesel.

  • Caltex: developing biofuel production facilities to support the transition to cleaner fuels.

Electrification of Operations

  • BHP and Woodside: electrifying mining and gas processing operations with renewable energy, including joint ventures to supply solar and wind energy to facilities in Western Australia.

  • Chevron: investing in renewable energy to reduce the carbon footprint of its gas liquefaction processes.
